UltraClean Mattress Cleaning Machine
A platform for cleaning mattresses, diverting them from the waste stream and giving them a new home
Meet Mattilda, the first purpose-built machine in the UK to reduce the huge number of mattresses being sent to landfill. Designed to be ten times faster than manual cleaning and connected to the web for remote monitoring. Mattresses are first manually inspected and pre-cleaned with environmentally-friendly detergent, then receive an intensive deep-clean with Steam, Vacuum, Ozone, UVc and 60 degrees of heat to dry them thoroughly.
We were commissioned by FRC Group, a Liverpool social enterprise and charity, to help in their mission to reduce furniture poverty by developing a machine for automating the cleaning of mattresses, so that can be put back into use. The first project, conducted in 2020 during the pandemic, started with capturing the requirements from all stakeholders - operator, supply-chain, installation, client - and concluded with the build and installation of the first prototype - a fully functional machine.
We also helped FRC Group win two grant applications - Made Smart and Innovate UK (Launchpad-Advanced Manufacturing LCR) to expedite the original project and a follow on project in 2024, to reinstate fire retardancy of the cleaned mattresses. UltraClean won a national recycling award with each reused mattress saving 79.5 kg of CO2, equivalent to taking 14 cars off the road for a day.
