MOB Guardian
Developing a sea safety system for the RNLI and McMurdo from initial concept to manufacture
Every year, the RNLI rescues hundreds of people from drowning due to incidents at sea, many of them working on fishing vessels. The MOB Guardian was an innovative position reporting system that tracked a vessel's position and alerted emergency services automatically of a man overboard or an emergency on the boat.
Working with fishermen, lifeboat crews and RNLI rescue centre staff, we developed the solution concept to ensure it was acceptable to fishermen (who were resistant to having their movements tracked) to encourage them to wear life vests and preserve their lives until they were rescued.
We delivered the entire innovation project, from initial concept to market production, including batch prototyping, user research and trials, and manufacturing tooling. Following its launch, the system saved five lives in its first year.
